The Sixteen Thousand Mile Run on My Harley

April 14, 2009:
I have been manipulating my mileage to score my 16,000 mile run on this morning's ride. Today is a special day, and one on which I intend to watch the odometer roll over.

Sadly, the temperature dawned at a chilly 53 degrees F. My parents are in town on personal business, and that meant that I needed to get my ride in early--before it would warm up.

I suited up in my winter-riding gear, including my Polartec Windblock shirt Maria made. My fingers might get cold, but the cold would at least be tolerable.

I checked the air in the tires and backed the bike out of the garage. The odometer read 15, 992. I did my traditional warm-up route, and entered the freeway heading westbound on I-10.

With only eight miles to log, I had to keep a close watch on the odometer. I noted that it read 15,998 as I neared my eastbound route on the North Loop. Two miles later I was just west of the Ella exit as the odometer displayed 16,000. Traffic was light enough to savor the moment, even in morning drive-time.

Almost instantly, as I topped a rise, a large road gator appeared in the left-hand tire track of my lane. Fortunately, I had chosen the right-hand tire track, so a slight jog took me out of danger. lStill, it was a reminder that nothing can be taken for granted on the back of a bike.

See you on the road. And don't forget to think.

All statements of speeds on various streets are simple estimates, and solely for novelity purposes. Actual speeds vary, but are always lower. I'm sure that legal speed limits are never exceeded, anything in this blog to the contrary nowithstanding.
