Controlling Fire Ants in the Tomato Patch in Houston

by Donald Ray Burger

Fire ants in the tomato patch present a dilemma. I do not recommend insecticides around edible plants. Boiling water discourages fire ants, but it also burns roots. It is also dangerous to move from flame to mound.

Fortunately, Gardenville sells an organic fire ant control that works for me. It is called Auntie Fuego Soil Conditioner. It is a mix of liquid compost, molasses and orange oil. Smells great and doubles as a mild organic fertilizer. Drench the mound, even if the ants are right up against the stem. Give it a try. Available at fine nurseries everywhere or order directly from Garden-Ville's website.
