What to Plant in February
First half of month: Kohlrabi, English peas, broccoli, carrots, onion plants, All month: lettuce, radish, spinach, dill, fennel, garlic chives, horseradish root, kohlrabi, mint plants, oregano plants, rosemary, tomatillo
Notes: It is usually too cold for tomatoes. I recommend the first week of March for tomatoes. If you are a gambler you can put out transplants in the last week of February, but be sure and protect them if it gets cold or too windy. It is always too cold for pepper plants. Hold off on fertilizing the lawn. Be patient.

MISC:
Divide day lilies if they are crowded.
Prune hybrid tea, floribunda and minature roses on 2/14. OGRs should not be cut back more than 1/3. Please do not prune your climbing roses. They bloom on old wood. If you prune them back, it means it will be another year before you have "old" canes for the blooms. If they are too large or growing in an unruly manner, it is ok to "groom" them. But realize that cutting limbs means no rose that year on that section of the plant.
Prune crape myrtles in February. Please just prune the tips.
Last chance to plant any trees you buy bare rooted.
Spray dormant oil on fruit trees before it gets too hot.
Male three-toed Mexican box turtle comes out of hibernation (2/28/98, 2/10/99, 2/20/00).

STAY CALM: Winter is almost over. It is natural for things to look brown and dead. DO NOT DISPAIR. Spring is on the way.
