Basking Areas for Butterflies
by Donald Ray Burger
Attorney at Law

Butterflies are cold blooded. Their activities are governed by the amount of heat their bodies can capture. Rocks absorb heat and butterflies will perch on them to absorb that heat.

Brick or concrete patios and paths may also be used for basking. Gravel paths or dry stream beds may also be used.

When placing rocks in the garden, be aware that butterflies prefer large southern and western-facing slopes. If the rock has a natural slope, be aware of this when positioning it.
